Film Screening and Discussion of Aïssa Maïga’s Documentary ‘Walking on Water’

woensdag 26 november 2025 - 14h30 - 18h00
3 Allée Fernand Léger, 94250 Gentilly, Île-de-France, France
Ville de Gentilly

Film screening of ‘Walking on Water’ by Aïssa Maïga. ‘Walking on Water’ was filmed in northern Niger between 2018 and 2020 and tells the story of the village of Tatiste, a victim of global warming, which is fighting for access to water through the construction of a borehole. Every day, fourteen-year-old Houlaye, like other young girls, walks for miles to fetch water, essential for the village’s survival.

This daily task prevents them, among other things, from attending school regularly. The lack of water also forces adults to leave their families every year to seek resources beyond the borders that are necessary for their survival.

However, this region has beneath its surface an aquifer lake spanning several thousand square kilometers. Driven by the inhabitants and through the action of the NGO Amman Imman, a borehole would bring the much-desired water to the center of the village and offer everyone a better life.

This screening will be followed by a discussion with children and young people from leisure centers, as well as students and participants in the MDF’s French language learning courses. The event is also open to families from Gentilly. Registration required at the Maison des familles. Ages 7 and up.
