Local Actions

Cities and regions team up with local actors for sustainable development

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) recognise the importance of awareness raising and development education to achieve its targets. A better and more critical understanding on the needs and challenges of sustainable development stimulates citizens’ active engagement both at the local and global scale for sustainable development, democracy, poverty reduction, human rights protection and environmental resilience.

As the closest level of government to the citizens, cities and regions play a key role in informing citizens and raising their awareness on sustainable development issues. They also play a pivotal role enabling and facilitating citizens’ mobilization and engagement by supporting local actors that are committed to sustainable development, including Civil Society Organizations, Non-Governmental organizations, youth groups, Academia, private sector, among others.
